Royal Worcester "strephon And Phyllis" Musician Pair, 1944–1948
A matching pair of Royal Worcester fine porcelain figurines depicting the young flute player Strephon and Phyllis with her tambourine. This is a beautiful late production edition, made between 1944 and 1948, of James Hadley’s Model No. 1803. Both figures, bearing the same mold number 1803, are seated against tree trunks accented with gilding.
The decoration combines Royal Worcester’s Patent Metallic colors—burnished gilding, bronze-green tones, and pinkish-brown—with faces and hands finished in a matte ivory, delicately highlighted by hand. The gilding and decoration are remarkably well-preserved.
The undersides bear the black-printed Royal Worcester crown mark, along with the inscriptions “Royal Worcester,” “Bone China” in smaller type, “Made in England,” and the form number 1803. This mark dates to the 1944–1955 period. The absence of the separate annual code V/W, introduced in 1949, allows the pair to be dated to 1944–1948. The pair remains in excellent condition, with vibrant gilding and no signs of restoration.
Dimensions: Strephon — weight 206 g; height 15.8 cm; width 8 cm; depth 8.5 cm. Phyllis — weight 225 g; height 16 cm; width 7.7 cm; depth 7.8 cm.
Condition: Both figures are in excellent condition, practically like new. Each has an original ventilation hole on the back, below the neck, as well as a corresponding hole on the base near the mark; these are manufacturing features and not damage. The gilding and painted decoration are particularly well preserved.
