Royal Worcester, “wind Maidens,” A Pair In Parian Porcelain By James Hadley, Circa 1870
An elegant matching pair of two-tone Parian figurines from Royal Worcester, “Before the Wind” and “Against the Wind,” sculpted by James Hadley. “Against the Wind” depicts the young woman leaning forward into the wind, while “Before the Wind” stands upright next to a base shaped like a tree trunk.
The pale green Parian drapery contrasts with the ivory-white figures. Small stars and fine gold lines highlight the lively folds of the garments; the circular bases, resembling tree trunks, are rimmed with gilding.
James Hadley (1837–1903), trained at Kerr & Binns in Worcester, became Royal Worcester’s principal sculptor around 1870. The movement of the drapery and the contrasting poses of these two figures illustrate his lively approach to porcelain sculpture. The “Before the Wind” model was created around 1862 and “Against the Wind” around 1865; this popular pair was produced over a long period in several finishes.
These polychrome versions required more work and were produced in smaller numbers than the standard ivory figures, making them significantly rarer and more sought-after today.
Dimensions: “Against the Wind”: weight 775 g; height 26.2 cm; width 10.2 cm; depth 12.5 cm. “Before the Wind”: weight 741 g; height 28.6 cm; width 10.4 cm; depth 10.4 cm.
