Large Staffordshire Figure Of Christ At The Column, Circa 1860

Large English Victorian Staffordshire glazed earthenware figure depicting Christ at the Column, made around 1860. The subject is traditionally known as The Flagellation or Christ at the Column and depicts an episode from the Passion of Christ.

Christ is depicted standing against a tall rectangular column, his head bowed and his hands bound behind his back. The figure is modeled entirely in the round, with precise detailing of the torso, back, shoulders, arms, and legs.

The figure rests on a substantial molded base adorned on the front with a large shell and rocaille motifs. A firing vent is visible at the back of the hollow column, a characteristic feature of the production of large Staffordshire earthenware figures.

This model is listed in A. & N. Harding, *Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835–1875*, Book 2, p. 22, fig. 1699, where it is identified as *The Flagellation of Christ*. Related monumental examples are also known from specialized collections, notably the Stephen Duckworth Collection.

Staffordshire, and particularly the Potteries around Stoke-on-Trent, was one of the most important and renowned centers of British ceramic production in the 18th and 19th centuries. This region played a major role in the development of English ceramics and its famous Victorian figurines.

Condition:
Age-related crazing in the glaze. Some paint loss and chipping on the hair and the orange-red drapery. Slight paint chipping on the hands. Otherwise in good vintage condition.
