Medieval Seal Made Of Brown Wax From The Town Of Brisach, Germany—14th–15th Century, Gothic Style

Medieval brown wax seal from the town of Brisach, Germany – 14th–15th century, Gothic

Rare medieval brown wax seal from the town of Brisach (Breisach am Rhein), Germany, dating from the 14th–15th centuries.

The seal features a large eagle with outstretched wings—an emblematic heraldic motif—occupying the central field. The partially preserved inscription reads: “Comites SI(gillum) B(risacho).”

Comparable seals from the town of Brisach are listed in the sigillographic database Sigilla, allowing this specimen to be compared with known impressions from this Rhine town.

The seal is preserved with its through-hole suspension cord made of vellum. It does not have a counter-seal.

Diameter: 3.8 cm

An interesting example of medieval German urban sigillography, intended for enthusiasts of ancient seals, medieval history, and historical documents.
