Merovingian Bronze Belt Plate With Cloisonné Decoration – 6th–7th Century Medieval
Merovingian bronze belt plate, cast in a single piece, featuring seven compartments designed to hold inlaid decoration using the cloisonné technique.
The compartments were likely intended to hold enamel or glass paste decoration, two techniques attested during the Merovingian period, particularly for bronze jewelry and belt fittings.
The reverse side retains three fasteners, used to secure the backing plate to the belt.
Inside the compartments, small circular holes made with a pointed tool can be seen. These perforations, intentionally created in the partitions, served to help the filling material—enamel or glass paste—adhere and remain in place.
Based on its shape and construction, this piece fits within the typology of belt fittings from the Merovingian period. Its typology allows for a more precise dating to the 6th–7th centuries.
