The Virgin is depicted holding the sleeping Infant Jesus close to her, in an intimate composition characteristic of 17th-century Italian devotional painting.

Various examples attest to the prevalence of this composition in 17th-century Italian painting, some of which have been attributed to the Roman School, circa 1650.

Another version, smaller in size (38.7 × 44.5 cm), attributed to an unknown artist, is held at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford (inv. PCF10) and listed in Art UK.

Condition: signs of wear. Canvas re-stretched and previously restored. Some wear, small losses, and signs of age remain, inherent to the work’s age, without affecting its interpretation or the quality of its presentation.
