This composition is based on a celebrated model by Paulus Potter (1625–1654), one of the foremost animal painters of the Dutch Golden Age, whose hunting scenes enjoyed great success and were widely emulated by artists and collectors alike.

It depicts a dramatic bear hunt in which a mounted hunter, sword raised, leads a pack of hounds against the animal. The balanced composition, vigorous sense of movement and lively depiction of the animals give the painting a remarkable decorative presence.
