Reference work:
This composition directly follows the celebrated Bear Hunt painted by Paulus Potter in 1649, now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. SK-A-316).

Potter’s monumental painting (305 × 338 cm) depicts a bear attacked by a pack of dogs, while a mounted hunter, sword drawn, intervenes in the struggle. The present work reprises the composition and its principal motifs on a reduced scale.
