Portrait Of An Aristocrat – French School, Late 18th Century
French School, late 18th century
Portrait of an Aristocrat
An elegant half-length portrait of a woman wearing a light-colored satin dress accented with a blue ribbon.
The subject is depicted with great restraint, in the spirit of French aristocratic portraiture from the late Ancien Régime.
Based on her facial features, the portrait has been attributed to Madame de Montesson (1738–1806), the morganatic wife of Louis-Philippe d’Orléans and a prominent figure in French social and cultural life during the second half of the 18th century.
The work captivates with its soft modeling, the delicate rendering of the fabrics, and the model’s serene presence.
Medium: oil on canvas.
Canvas dimensions: 83 × 66 cm.
On the reverse, an old label from the Caisse Générale des Réparations.
