The painting depicts the episode recounted in the Gospel according to Saint John (20:24–29), in which the risen Christ invites the apostle Thomas to touch the wound in his side in order to overcome his unbelief.

The composition follows the tradition of Italian Mannerism from the second half of the 16th century. The slender figures, the classical architecture structuring the space, and the refined color palette reflect the spread of Central Italian models during the late Renaissance.

Presented on its original panel, the work bears several traces of its history on the reverse: an old handwritten label in Italian, two old stamps that are now difficult to read, and an old inventory number. The panel shows very slight warping, characteristic of many old supports from this period, as well as an old dovetail repair, attesting to the care taken in its preservation over the centuries.
With its iconic subject matter, material authenticity, and the quality of its execution, this painting is a representative example of Italian art from the late Renaissance.

Antique panel composed of several joined planks. Very slight warping of the support; stable. Old dovetail repair on the reverse. Some wear and old restorations consistent with the work’s age. Presented in its original protective frame.
