Half-length portrait of a German officer wearing a red military uniform with black facings, richly decorated with metallic embroidery. His powdered hair, tied back in a queue with a black ribbon, together with the characteristics of the uniform, suggest a date in the third quarter of the eighteenth century.

The composition belongs to the tradition of German military portraiture of the Ancien Régime and depicts an officer serving in one of the princely states of the Holy Roman Empire.

Presented in an antique frame of later date.
