Ceres, An Allegory Of Summer — Oil On Canvas, 18th-century French School

An important 18th-century oil on canvas depicting Ceres, the Roman goddess of harvests, abundance, and fertility, depicted here as the allegory of Summer.

The goddess is depicted seated in a landscape rendered in chiaroscuro, her head adorned with ears of wheat and holding a sheaf of grain—traditional attributes of Ceres. She is surrounded by several children and putti, including a young child asleep in the foreground, evoking the gentleness, fertility, and prosperity associated with the harvest season.

The composition is distinguished by the richness of the drapery in warm shades of red, ochre, and orange, contrasting with the dark, cloudy background. The delicate skin tones, the fluid movement of the fabrics, and the overall elegance of the scene reflect the decorative style of 18th-century French painting, which drew upon the great allegorical cycles dedicated to the Seasons.

A beautiful, large-scale decorative work that would make a striking feature in a classical interior, a historic home, or a gallery setting.

Presented in a modern wooden frame with gilded stucco decoration featuring foliage, bouquets, and rocaille motifs, in the Louis XV style.

18th-century painting.
