The Archangel Gabriel - Emilian School - 18th Century
Emilian School
18th century
Oil on canvas
Canvas: 52 x 69 cm
Frame: 67 x 84
Excellent condition
The painting depicts the Archangel Gabriel with his beautiful face shown in profile.
A strong frontal light illuminates the skin tones and garments, creating a striking effect and a sharp contrast against the dark background.
The splendid Celestial Being rests his hands crossed over his chest in the foreground, while his outstretched wings are barely visible in the half-light.
Note the magnificent features of the subject, whom the artist depicts in a highly captivating manner, creating a male face with distinctly feminine traits—resulting in a beautiful angel without a clearly defined gender, as is traditional.
The work exhibits the stylistic characteristics of 18th-century Emilian painting and the 17th-century Bolognese Masters; in particular, it draws on similar works by Elisabetta Sirani.
The painting is still on its original canvas and in excellent condition. The canvas has been removed from its original fixed stretcher and mounted on a new stretcher to ensure proper tension. A beautiful lacquered frame with gilded moldings perfectly complements the work.
