"annunciation" Italian School, 17th–18th Century
"Annunciation"
Oil on canvas, relined
Italian School, 17th–18th century
Contemporary gilded wooden frame decorated in relief
Frame size: 150 x 120 cm
Canvas size: 127.5 x 100.5 cm
The painting depicts the evangelical moment of the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel communicates the conception of Christ to the Virgin Mary. On the left, the announcing angel, depicted with outstretched wings and a flowing robe, is captured in a descending motion. The gesture of his raised hand indicates the act of divine revelation. On the right, the Virgin Mary, depicted in a recollected and contemplative pose, with her gaze lowered and her hand on her chest, symbolizes acceptance and humility. Mary is placed next to a lectern with an open book, a clear reference to the Holy Scriptures and spiritual meditation. Above the figures appears a dove coming from above, a symbol of the divine presence and the Holy Spirit. Good condition with widespread craquelure on the painted surface consistent with the age of the work.
