Late 17th-century School
The painting depicts a battle scene between armed knights captured in full motion, some wearing turbans and oriental robes, suggesting a possible clash between Christian and Ottoman armies, a popular theme in 17th-century battle painting. In the center, a white horse lying on the ground captures the attention, accentuating the drama of the action. In the background on the right, other armed groups can be glimpsed, while in the background, a landscape opens up, lending great depth to the entire scene. The strong use of chiaroscuro highlights the figures and horses, accentuating the pathos. This painting clearly reflects the influence of Jacques Courtois, Francesco Simonini, and artists of the Flemish school active in Italy.
