The softness of the faces, the rendering of the draperies, the pyramidal composition, and the use of warm, enveloping light are typical of 17th-century Central and Northern Italian painting.
The chromatic sensitivity and the typology of the faces hark back to Italian schools (most likely Emilia).

The young woman painted in the foreground stands out against the drapes in the background. She is dressed in a light dress that accentuates her ample, sculptural curves and leaves one breast exposed. She is surrounded by three children: one is sleeping, while the others cling to her body, and one is about to feed from her breast.

The painter constructed the four figures as if they were a single body, harmoniously connecting each movement within a refined balance of elements to create one of the most effective examples of balanced painting.
