Large Carved Chinese Shoulao Figure Made Of Soapstone, Circa 1890

Large Chinese figure from the late 19th century, carved from soapstone, depicting Shoulao, the traditional god of Longevity, circa 1890.

The immortal is depicted with his characteristic rounded forehead, long beard, and serene expression. He holds a peach of immortality in one hand and a tall, gnarled staff in the other. His long, layered robes are deeply carved and adorned with stylized shou (壽) characters, traditional symbols of longevity.

The staff rises behind the figure and ends in a deeply pierced, openwork section shaped like a root. The cream-gray soapstone displays natural variations of beige and gray, while the face, hands, peach, and folds of the garment are finely carved.

The figure rests on a separate dark reddish-brown stone base, carved in the shape of openwork rocks, creating a striking contrast with the sculpture’s lighter stone.

Condition:
A small superficial scratch on the back of the head and a small chip on the back of the belt. The rest is in excellent original condition.
