"Guanyin Sculpture In Soapstone"
This piece depicts Guanyin (Avalokiteśvara), the Bodhisattva of compassion and mercy, carved from steatite (often called soapstone). The stone displays a beautiful honey to ochre hue, with variations in color due to veining and patina. The figure is shown seated in a relaxed pose (rājalilāsana), wearing flowing robes with finely rendered folds. The face is serene, the eyes half-closed in meditation. Engraved motifs representing auspicious clouds or Buddhist symbols are visible on the shoulders and back. This type of sculpture is characteristic of Chinese craftsmanship, often produced from the 17th to the early 20th century (Qing Dynasty).
