18th-century Flemish Painting – Man With A Pipe And A Mug, A Follower Of David Teniers

This work is firmly rooted in the tradition of 18th-century Flemish genre painting, following in the footsteps of the great masters of the previous century, notably David Teniers. Here, the painter takes up one of the tradition’s favorite themes: the lively and carefully observed depiction of a figure from the common people, in a familiar and spontaneous pose.

The figure is depicted wearing a tall felt hat and a woolen coat with two rows of buttons. In one hand he holds a white earthenware pipe, and in the other, a Germanic-style stoneware mug of the Frechen type. These accessories, rendered with great precision, contribute to the composition’s documentary and picturesque appeal.

The quality of the execution is particularly noteworthy. Despite its small size, the painter demonstrates great finesse in the treatment of materials and details: the fabric of the cape, the figure’s facial features, the pipe, the headgear, and the stoneware of the mug are rendered with remarkable precision. The painting does not appear to be a mere exercise in copying; on the contrary, it demonstrates true pictorial mastery and a personal interpretation of the classical models. The artist can thus be considered a high-caliber Flemish genre painter, working in the tradition of Teniers and drawing inspiration from the tradition of Flemish folk scenes.

The work bears a monogram in the lower left corner, as yet unidentified, which can be read as “HB” or “PHB.”

In good overall condition. Note: There is localized lifting of the paint layer in the upper right corner, which can easily be restored. This damage is limited to the border and does not affect the main subject.
