Important Solid Silver Coffee Pot With 18th-century Coat Of Arms, Nantes, 1770

Important and rare silver chocolate pot from Nantes, dating from the Louis XV period, resting on three scroll-shaped legs with cartouche-shaped fasteners. The baluster-shaped body is engraved with large coats of arms of alliance, surmounted by a crown and bearing the motto " AULTRE NE VEUIL".  The applied spout is encircled by a fluted “ring” that frames a lower band of acanthus leaf decoration with a drop-shaped knob. A magnificent fretwork design surmounts the seed-shaped lid. The piece is remarkably hallmarked (both body and lid) with the hallmarks of the guild (a hallmark featuring “NANTES” , a crown at the top, a fleur-de-lis at the bottom, and a cord around it) and guild hallmarks (a leopard-spotted lion’s head) for NANTES 1769–75, the Guild Hallmarks for NANTES 1770 (an inverted letter “C,” an ermine in the center, and a crown at the top) and the hallmarks of Master Goldsmith CharlesBROUARD (hallmark with the initials “CB,” a pointed fleur-de-lis, and a crown at the top) received in 1744. As the reference book *Orfèvrerie nantaise* (in the *Cahiers de l’Inventaire* series) aptly points out, Nantes primarily produced religious pieces in addition to cutlery, serving dishes, and wine tasters.As for coffee pots, the only one referenced (page 336, Ref. 250) is a very simple model from Nantes, 1788, by Master Silversmith René Bridon (see the Pays de Loire Inventory file).
