Rectangular in section, it rests on a small foot formed of curves, counter-curves, flowering branches, ram's heads, and rural landscapes.
The highly curved body of the caddy is embossed on each side with a romantic composition depicting couples in a rural setting, framed by scrollwork, curves and counter-curves, small flowers, rocaille shells, etc.
The lid is decorated with putti and is topped with a leontiform finial.
The caddy is hallmarked:
. Letter N, date letter, or N for the city of Nuremberg
. Crest to be identified
. French import hallmark with a "Weevil" for solid silver
I have been unable to identify these hallmarks, but they are most likely hallmarks from the city of Hanau, a production center specializing in the reproduction of pieces in the 18th-century style, or less likely, from the Netherlands.
Superb box, richly decorated with charming romantic scenes, with a very elegant curve.
