Jorrez: Rare 18th-century Solid Silver Dish With The Saint Malo Coat Of Arms, 1769–72

SAINT-MALO 1769–72

Extremely rare, heavy, round Saint-Malo dish in solid 18th-century silver, featuring a filleted border design. The rim is engraved with the coat of arms of the alliance, surmounted by a Marquis’s crown and bearing the motto “INNOCENTIBUS NON NOCENT.” Hallmarks for the maker’s mark (a crowned “M”) and the assayer’s mark (a tower), Common City Hall hallmark for SAINT MALO 1769–72 (letter “I” surmounted by a three-masted ship) and the hallmark of Master Goldsmith Pierre-Louis JORREZ  (Hallmark featuring the initials “PL” divided by an ermine, a “J” below, and the two grains of remedy, all crowned) received in 1741 to practice in Port Louis; he later moved his business to Saint-Malo. Extremely rare, heavy, heraldic dish from Saint-Malo in very good condition and remarkably hallmarked, with minor surface scratches from use.
