Maurice Joron (1883-1937) - Reclining Nude On Silk, 1933 - Oil

Oil on canvas signed "M. Joron" upper left, by Maurice Joron (1883-1937). The work depicts a reclining female nude on pale, pearly sheets, her head thrown back and one arm folded, a red cushion adding a warm note against a dark, silky ground. A sensual, refined study with fine handling and luminous flesh tones, characteristic of the artist's gifts as a portraitist.

Provenance / history: bears on the reverse an old handwritten label (a press-review excerpt) referring to the 1933 Salon of La Baule-les-Pins and "the magnificent nudes of Maurice Joron, with their luminous flesh, admirably set off by silk backgrounds" — dating the work to around 1933 and connecting it to that Salon.

Maurice Joron (Paris, 1883 – Vaucresson, 1937) was a French painter, a pupil of Fernand Cormon. A great admirer of Titian and Rembrandt and a sought-after portraitist, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1900, became a member and received numerous medals. A dedicated space is devoted to him at the Musée Adrien Mentienne in Bry-sur-Marne.
