Accompanied by a black and white photo, 12.5 × 17.5, of the painting with on the back this handwritten and signed comment by Jean Gouin certifying its authenticity: “I certify that the oil on canvas reproduced on the back: “Pensive Nude” 82 × 61 cm., signed lower left, is an authentic work by André Lhote, executed around 1925. Paris, April 22, 1991 Jean Gouin, nephew of André Lhote.” In envelope noted: Cerficat André Lhote. André LHOTE 1885-1962, prominent French Cubist painter known for his work on figures, portraits, landscapes and still lifes, as well as for his significant influence as a teacher and art theorist. Initially trained in wood carving in Bordeaux, he then studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and devoted himself to painting full-time from 1905. After the first Fauvist experiments, Lhote embraced Cubism and joined the influential Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting alongside great modernists such as Albert Gleizes, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia and Jean Metzinger.—- The Journal of an Art Fool - 29 titles XXIème Chapitre Lhote: the war of succession is open May 1, 2004 Several collectors of works by André Lhote certified by his nephew Jean Gouin are now in open struggle against the committee recently created to produce the catalogue raisonné of the artist's work, which has contested a number of certificates issued by the rights holder. They have thus decided to come together in an association determined to restore to Gouin's children, two girls and a boy, the moral rights which in their opinion belong to them and thus deny any authority to this committee. A major legal battle is in the offing and the association led in Bordeaux by Dr. Fauquié intends not to give up in the face of what it calls an abuse of power. It is therefore determined to defend the memory of Jean Gouin and his wife for the work that the couple accomplished until his death. "The Gouin family holds all the notes and archives relating to Lhote's work and, faced with their refusal to transmit them to this committee, the latter saw fit to abusively question the certificates previously issued by Jean Gouin. In the name of what? I wonder because this committee has no authority to issue opinions because the moral right belongs to the heirs of the beneficiary," declared Dr. Fauquié. "Many expert reports made by Jean Gouin were contested by this committee, which decreed that the beneficiary had made blunders even though he had done his work in all honesty with the help of his wife, who had undertaken extensive studies concerning Lhote's work. The Gouin couple did not issue opinions lightly, contrary to the rumors spread by this committee, and our association intends, for its part, to produce a relevant catalogue raisonné using the archives held by the Gouin family. In conclusion, our action has no profit motive, while the objectives of the committee created in "Paris has nothing philanthropic about it since it is run by a merchant," he added.
