Alice Giffard De La Rive (19th Century) Animated Landscape, Cattle Watering By A River Oil

Alice GIFFARD DE LA RIVE (19th century)
Animated Landscape, Cattle Watering by a River
Oil on canvas, signed "Alice Giffard de la Rive" lower right, 39.5 x 31 cm — Frame: 49 x 41 cm

Oil on canvas depicting a river lined with tall poplars in golden autumn foliage, where two cows drink under the watch of a young herder, in the soft light of late afternoon. The classical construction of the landscape, between an animated foreground and a hazy distance, along with the careful treatment of the vegetation, belongs to the tradition of pastoral landscape widely practised in French painting during the second half of the nineteenth century.

Alice Giffard de la Rive, several of whose works attest to an attachment to the Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc region as well as to coastal landscapes, also appears to have devoted herself to this type of pastoral riverside scene, in a peaceful, descriptive vein typical of the genre.

The canvas is in good condition.

Alice GIFFARD DE LA RIVE (19. Jahrhundert)

Paesaggio animato, bestiame all'abbeveratoio lungo il fiume
