Imaginary Landscape with Trees

Oil on canvas — 24 × 32.5 cm
Signed “Roman” lower left.

A landscape between woodland and dream

Trees with rounded crowns rise above uneven terrain, painted in deep greens, ochres and turquoise tones. At the centre, a milky opening draws the eye towards an undefined distance. Forms become lighter and seem almost weightless, as though the woodland continued into a luminous mist.

The landscape unfolds through a succession of soft, almost organic shapes. Trunks, foliage and rocks share subtle similarities; their shifting outlines lend nature an unusual presence. Small touches of light animate the trees and ground, enlivening the surface while preserving the unity of the composition.

Within this small format, the artist creates a surprisingly expansive space. Depth emerges as much from variations in colour and transparency as from perspective.

Bernard Ambielle and the Roman signature

Born in Strasbourg in 1951, Bernard Ambielle studied at the city’s School of Decorative Arts. His career encompasses printmaking, painting and an exploration of colour. An important collaboration with Japan between 1986 and 1993 subsequently helped introduce his work to a wider audience. Biographical presentation.

The name Roman, used during part of his career, honours his maternal grandfather. Around 1980, he transferred his reverse-glass painting explorations to oil; a visionary cycle concluded with an exhibition in Strasbourg in 1984. François Walgenwitz’s monograph.

His official website emphasises the idealised, magical atmospheres of his work and records several awards at the international naïve art event in Varenna, on Lake Como. Official biography.

The visionary strand of his work

This canvas may be associated with his visionary explorations, although a precise date cannot be assigned. The woodland becomes a pictorial invention: recognisable elements combine to create an independent world, poised between landscape and organic abstraction.

This freedom reveals an important aspect of Ambielle’s art beyond the urban scenes for which he is also known. Galerie AIDA likewise highlights the coexistence of narrative figuration and more stylised compositions within his work. Galerie AIDA.

An intimate, luminous painting in which landscape becomes a realm of the imagination.

Condition: minor wear along the edges.

Bernard Ambielle, genannt Roman (geboren 1951)

Imaginäre Landschaft mit Bäumen

Öl auf Leinwand — 24 × 32,5 cm
Unten links „Roman“ signiert.
