Oil on canvas signed "René Thomsen" lower right, by René Thomsen (1897-1976), a painter of the School of Paris. The work depicts a village landscape with poplars beneath a grey, luminous sky: houses standing out among bare trees, with a field rendered in vibrant impasto in the foreground. An intimate, sensitive composition with generous handling and muted harmonies, characteristic of Thomsen's art — which critics compared to Sisley and Vuillard.

René Thomsen (Paris, 1897 – Versailles, 1976) was a French painter and engraver of the School of Paris. A pupil of Louis Anquetin and Fernand Cormon, he frequented the Académie Colarossi alongside Soutine, Pascin and Modigliani. A member of the Salon d'Automne from 1921 and winner of the Prix Velázquez (Casa de Velázquez, Madrid, 1931-1932), he travelled across France, Spain and Morocco. His works are held in numerous museums (Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, MuMa Le Havre, Petit Palais, Louvre).
