Large oval charcoal portrait (with white heightening) depicting Victor-Napoléon Marcadé (1810-1854), the celebrated French jurist. The sitter is shown half-length, in a lawyer's robe with a white cravat and a cross-shaped decoration on his chest, his gaze turned towards the viewer. A drawing of fine presence and subtle modelling, in the Romantic taste of the mid-19th century.

Born and died in Rouen, Victor-Napoléon Marcadé was a barrister at the Rouen bar and later a lawyer at the Court of Cassation (1851-1854). He was one of the founders of the Revue critique de législation et de jurisprudence and is best known for his Explication théorique et pratique du Code Napoléon (first published as Éléments du droit civil français, 1842), a major work of French civil law reprinted throughout the 19th century and continued after his death by Paul Pont.
