Georges Roubaudo (1898–1999)
Old House in Antibes, near the Ramparts
Oil on canvas — 50 × 61 cm
Signed “G. Roubaudo” lower left. An inscription on the reverse appears to read “Vieille maison du rempart d’Antibes”.
A painter closely connected with Antibes
Born in Antibes, Georges Roubaudo found lasting inspiration in his native town and the French Riviera. His career also included a two-year cultural assignment in Vietnam. The biography accompanying his studio sale emphasises his attachment to Mediterranean subjects and tightly framed compositions. Biographical notice, Tessier & Sarrou.
Colour as architecture
This painting expresses a Fauvist and Expressionist sensibility through its contrasts: vermilion tree trunks meet the turquoise greens of the ground and sky, while yellow façades concentrate the light. The trees form a structural framework before the house, their branching shapes dividing the landscape into areas of vivid colour. Dark outlines reinforce silhouettes and volumes, while generously applied paint preserves the movement of the brush. Colour moves beyond description to convey the intensity of the place.
A house behind the trees
Beyond a screen of bare trunks stands a house with green shutters and red roofs. The rocky ground, arranged in sloping planes, leads the eye towards the buildings while retaining a strong foreground presence. The inscription on the reverse associates the subject with the ramparts of Antibes. Although it does not establish a precise date, it identifies a local motif transformed by an individual vision: familiar architecture becomes a landscape animated by lines and contrasting colours.
Condition: wear and small paint losses along the edges, particularly at the bottom.

Georges Roubaudo (1898–1999)
Altes Haus in Antibes, nahe der Stadtmauer
Öl auf Leinwand — 50 × 61 cm
Unten links „G. Roubaudo“ signiert. Rückseitige Inschrift, vermutlich „Vieille maison du rempart d’Antibes“.
