Oil on canvas by Roberto Alvarez Rios (Havana 1932 – Saint-Benoît, Réunion, 2015), a Cuban painter, draftsman, and sculptor of the School of Paris.
A surrealist composition titled "Comme au vent de l’amour" (As if in the wind of love), in which two white figures with fluid, organic forms appear to embrace and take flight against a deep, dark background. The dreamlike rendering of the elongated bodies, the touches of bright red (a bow, a mouth), and the nocturnal atmosphere are characteristic of the artist’s poetic language, imbued with gentleness and mystery.
Trained at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, Álvarez Ríos saw his style evolve toward Surrealism after meeting Wifredo Lam in 1950. Settling in Paris in 1958, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and frequented the circles of Roberto Matta and André Breton. He represented Cuba alongside Lam at the 1971 International Festival of Visual Arts in Luchon. His works are held in several public collections, including the National Museum in Havana, the Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile, and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
