Aram Koupetzian (b. 1928) - Karabakh Women Baking Lavash, 1967

Oil on cardboard by Aram Koupetzian (born 1928), dated 1967, depicting an Armenian interior scene: two women of Nagorno-Karabakh in traditional dress baking lavash (Armenian flatbread), one rolling out the dough, the other seated by the hearth among the stacked breads. An early figurative work with a broad, colourful touch, predating the "synthetic cubist" period for which the artist became known.

Titled and signed on the reverse in Cyrillic: "Карабахские женщины пекут лаваш" ("Karabakh women baking lavash"), dated 1967, with dimensions (40 × 49 cm).

Aram Koupetzian (Priskoumsk, 1928 – 2016), also transliterated Koupetsian, was an Armenian painter and pupil of Martiros Saryan. Trained in Yerevan and then at the Surikov Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow, he was named a member of the Moscow Academy of Painting in 1957. He developed a style marked by "synthetic cubism" and collage, on musical and Armenian themes. His international career began at the Basmadjian gallery in Paris; his works are held in museums (National Gallery of Armenia, Moscow Museum of Modern Art) and appear at international auctions (Christie's, Sotheby's, Drouot).
