Marie-louise Cirée (1916–2015) – Perched Village In Provence – Salon Des Artistes Français 1957
An oil on canvas by Marie-Louise Cirée (Paris, 1916 – Cormeilles-en-Parisis, 2015) depicting a Mediterranean village perched on a hillside and dominated by its bell tower; blue-hued mountains rise in the background, while a vineyard slopes down toward a path in the foreground. The composition is luminous, rendered with the free, vibrant brushwork characteristic of the artist's *plein-air* painting style.
46 x 55 cm
The back of the work bears the exhibition stamp from the 1957 Salon des Artistes Français, allowing it to be dated and confirming its inclusion in this prestigious Parisian exhibition.
The daughter of architect Louis Cirée, Marie-Louise Cirée trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. A landscape painter who traveled widely, she depicted numerous European cities—including Cadaqués, Marseille, Vichy, Saint-Raphaël, and Paris—as well as scenes from West Africa. Her work earned her several distinctions, including the Gold Medal from the Artistes Français, the City of Saint-Raphaël Prize (1954), the Grand Prix de Vichy (1957), and the French West Africa Painting Prize (1956). She was named a Chevalier of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and received the Silver Medal of the City of Paris. She exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, and various Parisian galleries.
