A student of Jean Girardet and André Joly, and a friend of Joseph Vernet, he specialised in fantasy landscapes combining waterfalls, bridges, ruins, and picturesque figures. An emulator of Hubert Robert, he also spread a taste for antique ruins and melancholic landscapes, while depicting the Lorraine spirit through views of towns such as Nancy, Lunéville, and Metz. He was also one of the first French painters to produce, on commission, "château portraits" for their owners, a tradition then more typically English. A monographic exhibition was devoted to him at the Musée Lorrain in Nancy in 2006.

As the artist's biography and body of work remain incompletely documented, the market commonly uses the term "attributed to" for his works, as is the case here.
