Jean-georges Pasquet (1851–1936) The Biarritz Lighthouse And The Beach In The Basque Country

An oil on canvas by Jean-Georges Pasquet (Périgueux, 1851–1936) depicting a view of the Basque coast: the foreground features a beach and a path winding through wild grasses, overlooked on the left by a rocky cliff, while the Biarritz lighthouse stands out against the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. It is a luminous work of striking contrasts, featuring the artist's characteristic vibrant palette and demonstrating the application of Impressionist principles to a realistic landscape.

38 x 55 cm

A native of Périgueux, Jean-Georges Pasquet attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris—graduating with honors—and studied under Gustave Boulanger, Jules Lefebvre, and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. Upon returning to the Périgord region in 1879, he became the director of the Municipal School of Drawing in Périgueux. A landscape painter associated with the Périgueux School, he set up his easel along the banks of the Dordogne and Isle rivers but also traveled along the Atlantic coast—specifically the Royan and Saint-Georges-de-Didonne area—and through the Basque Country, producing beautiful views of Biarritz and the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
