Il dipinto raffigura un cavallo baio scuro, munito di capezza, legato a un pilastro ligneo all'ingresso di una scuderia. L'animale è ritratto di profilo, con la testa rivolta verso lo spettatore, in una luce morbida proveniente da sinistra che illumina un lembo di cielo e lascia il resto della composizione in una calda penombra, tipica delle scene di scuderia ottocentesche.

La pennellata, l'inquadratura ravvicinata sull'animale e il trattamento chiaroscurale dello sfondo collocano l'opera nella tradizione del ritratto equino così come si sviluppò in Francia e in Inghilterra nel corso del XIX secolo, un genere in cui il cavallo da sella o da tiro è rappresentato come soggetto autonomo, spesso commissionato dal proprietario.
