Georges de Sonneville (1890–1967) Title: Circus scene – acrobatic rider and horseDate: 1928Technique: Oil on panelSignature: Signed lower left “Georges de Sonneville 1928”Estimated dimensions: 74 cmX 40 cmWith frame: 89 cm x 56 cmFraming: Natural wood frame, sober, modern style Description of the work In the interior of a circus tent, two acrobats in pink costumes, perched on a galloping gray horse, perform a spectacular figure under the gaze of an elegant trainer in a black frock coat. The audience, in the background, occupies the stands in a festive atmosphere, punctuated by the diagonal lines of the decor. The scene is dynamic, almost cinematic. Sonneville’s style is evident here: stylized forms, a bold palette, and expressive treatment of the bodies. The tension between movement and balance, typical of the circus world, is rendered with a certain graphic humor and a very modern touch.
