Alice Kingham-lachevre (1888-?) American School – Draft Horse – Salon Violet Horse
Oil on canvas by Alice Kingham-Lachevre (born 1888), American / French school, depicting a powerful harnessed draft horse standing three-quarter view before a brick wall, with a few geese in the foreground. A work full of presence, vigorously modelled with a fine impasto, characteristic of this animal painter who specialised in the depiction of horses.
61 x 50 cm
The horse, named "Benjaman", is inscribed lower left beneath the artist's signature. The work is titled "Un bon serviteur" ("A Good Servant") on an exhibition label on the reverse from the Salon Violet, bearing the artist's name and her address at 29 rue Malar, Paris 7e.
Attached to the American / French school, Alice Kingham-Lachevre was active in the first half of the 20th century and made a speciality of equestrian and animal subjects. Her works — Camargue horses, horse markets, scenes of the American West — appear regularly at public auction.
