Engraving Map Of Touraine And Its Blason - Ep. Mid 17th Century

The engraving is organized around the hydrographic network of the Loire and its tributaries, depicted in blue wash, structuring the entire territory. The main towns and strongholds - Tours, Amboise, Chinon, Loches, Richelieu and Saumur - are indicated by small stylized cavalier views, typical of XVIIᵉ century French cartography. Provincial boundaries and roads are traced and enhanced with color. Several wooded massifs are represented by stylized groups of trees.

The title takes its place in an elegant draped cartouche in the upper left-hand section, while a scale in "Lieues Françoises" appears in a frame at the bottom of the composition.

This map is accompanied by the classically shaped BLASON "TOURS en TOURAINE" is composed of a field gules charged with three embattled towers argent, masoned and pierced sable, set two and one. The upper part is occupied by a chief of France azure semé de trois fleurs de lys or. The composition is accompanied by its original heraldic legend:

"Gules, 3 Towers embattled Argent, a Chief of France."

By Pierre DU VAL D'ABBEVILLE, nephew and pupil of the famous cartographer Nicolas Sanson, whose work he continued by widely distributing maps and descriptive plates of the French provinces. Appointed "Ordinary Geographer to the King" under the reign of Louis XIV, he contributed to the representation and structuring of the kingdom's territory.
