Object description :

"Borne Clock (rare) In Bronze And Porcelain Plaques - France - Early 19th Century"
In the form of a "borne", this clock is made of chased gilt bronze, decorated with palmettes and egg moldings. The whole rests on a rectangular base with recesses, decorated with finely chiseled friezes. The front and sides are decorated with superb Paris porcelain plaques. On a white background, they present a polychrome decoration of floral garlands. The round dial, gilded and guilloché in its center, is decorated with black Roman numerals and Breguet-type hands. The central front plate features a blue vase (imitating cast iron) overflowing with brightly colored flowers (roses, pansies, peonies, anemones), the side panels present tall bouquets in vases also blue. A frieze of stylized foliage underlines the base of the central plate. The upper part is surmounted by a stylized basin evoking an ornamental jet of water. Original mechanical movement with wire suspension (unsigned dial), striking the hours and half-hours on a bell. Brand: NEANTDimension(s): Height. 32 cm cm - Length. 15 cm - Width. 9 cm,Condition(s): PERFECT GENERAL CONDITION, both aesthetic and functional - mechanism completely revised. Pendulum and key provided. Period: CHARLES X - EARLY 19TH CENTURY. The terminal clocks, often made of gilt bronze and Paris porcelain, appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century. They reflect the taste of the time for decorative compositions combining architectural rigor and ornamental refinement. Of cubic architectural form, these clocks are directly inspired by antique terminals or columns, hence their name. Their structure is generally animated by finely painted porcelain plates, fixed on the different faces of the case, often framed in chiseled bronze. They frequently present:– polychrome floral decorations on a white background,– guilloché gilded dials, sometimes enameled or circled with blue enamel,– and neoclassical elements such as palmettes, garlands or trompe-l'oeil vases. Very fashionable at the beginning of the 19th century, these clocks combine watchmaking precision and decorative aesthetics, perfectly illustrating the know-how of Parisian manufacturers at that time.
