Maritime Correspondence Signs - Marine Engraving - 18th C.
Antique engraving from the XVIIIᵉ century illustrating maritime signals and naval maneuvers between warships at sea.
Engraved by BERNARD.
Original engraving, on steel with burin.
The engraving depicts two ships of the line seen offshore, exchanging cannon fire materialized by large clouds of white smoke. The ships display flags and unfurled sails, testifying to the naval and military vocabulary of the period.
The scene is part of the technical plates devoted to navigation, maritime communications and signaling exercises used in the XVIIIᵉ century in European navies. The different positions of the ships, their flags and the cannon fire correspond to the systems for transmitting orders used before modern communications.
