Glass Cooler In Soft Porcelain From Arras - 18th Century

Soft-paste porcelain. The upper section features a relief decoration forming an undulating frieze, creating a play of light and shadow on the white surface. White background with a blue monochrome decoration, composed of small stylized floral motifs and twigs. The handles, in the shape of an inverted bow, are highlighted with a blue line emphasizing their form. It is enhanced by a silver mount comprising a top border and a molded base with pearls, added later and hallmarked, which reinforce its precious character while protecting the most exposed parts. Dimensions: Height 10.5 cm - Length 12.7 cm, Condition(s): PERFECT CONDITION - Minor wear on the body, Period: 18th century ATTRIBUTION TO THE ARRAS MANUFACTURE Although this piece is unmarked, several elements allow for its attribution to the Arras manufactory. The shape of the inverted arched side handles with blue monochrome decoration corresponds to known models of 18th-century Arras production (see comparative photograph of another glass cooler bearing the mark "AR" in high-fire blue). The upper part, decorated with scalloped reliefs, is also a distinctive feature found on several pieces attributed to Arras (see comparative photograph of a large bottle cooler marked "AR"). The underglaze blue monochrome decoration, composed of small floral motifs and stylized twigs, is fully in keeping with the decorative repertoire of the manufactory. Finally, the appearance of the paste, a slightly creamy white, dense yet fine, exhibiting the particular texture characteristic of soft-paste porcelain from Arras, reinforces this attribution. All of these formal, technical, and stylistic elements thus allow us to attribute this glass cooler bucket, with great certainty, to the Arras manufactory, 18th century.
