Marine Map

Artist: Jacques-nicolas Bellin

Original intaglio engraving on laid paper.
Fine hand-watercolored colors.

By Jacques-Nicolas BELLIN, known as N. Bellin, was one of the most important French cartographers and hydrographers of the XVIIIᵉ century.
Born in 1703 and died in 1772, he held the position of Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine under Louis XV. He worked mainly for the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine, participating in the production of numerous nautical charts, maritime atlases and geographical descriptions of French and foreign coasts.

The engraving details the complex network of ponds, canals, graus and lowlands characteristic of the Camargue coastline. The various bodies of water - Étang de la Ville, Étang du Roy, Étang de Cailives and Étang de la Petite Camargue - are depicted with remarkable topographical care, while the navigation channels, redoubts, batteries and military works testify to the strategic importance of this coastal region.
Beautiful rocaille cartouche containing the map's title and scale. A fleur-de-lys indicating north, as well as indications of marine depths at low tide, complete the composition and underline its nautical and hydrographic character.
