Roger Dérieux (Paris, 1922 - Pern, Lot, 2015)
Oil on plywood panel
Signed lower left, dated lower right: 1954
Cat. P n° 311
Trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in André Lhote's studio, Roger Dérieux established himself in the 1950s as one of the figures of the Nouvelle École de Paris. His paintings from this period, inspired by Matisse and Bonnard, combine rigorous construction in planes with freedom of color.
This small format, painted in Mirmande - a medieval village perched on a spur in the Drôme, frequented by many artists since the 1930s - offers a bird's-eye view of the surrounding agricultural plain. The landscape is captured in all its summertime generosity: the plots of land, treated in broad yellow and gold flat tints, are punctuated by a network of dark lines evoking hedges, paths and borders. Round-topped trees, rendered in touches of dark green and burgundy, punctuate the foreground. In the background, blue hills and squared-off fields form an almost abstract composition, in which Lhote's lesson blends with a highly personal Mediterranean sensibility. The palette, vivid and assertive, testifies to Dérieux's full mastery at the age of thirty-two.
On the reverse. Typed label bearing title, technique, date and catalog number (Cat. P n° 311); handwritten annotation "sur panneau contreplaqué"; studio sale stamp.
