Artist: Entourage De Christian Van Couwenbergh (1604 Delft – 1667 Cologne)
Circle of Christian van Couwenbergh (Delft, 1604 – Cologne, 1667)
Italianate Landscape with Travelers
Oil on oak panel
30.5 × 40.5 cm
17th century

In a vast southern landscape bathed in warm, golden light, two travelers advance along a dirt road in the foreground. A rider in a scarlet cloak dominates the scene, accompanied by a figure in blue leading pack donkeys. A spotted hunting dog precedes them, adding lively movement to the lower part of the composition. In the background, several other figures are visible, partially obscured.

The composition is masterfully organized around a large tree with dense foliage that vertically structures the space, while the eye glides towards a luminous distance where powerful, bluish mountains stand out—likely an evocation of the Neapolitan or Roman countryside. The sky, animated by billowing white clouds against an azure background, lends the whole an atmosphere of serenity and open-air beauty characteristic of the Italianate landscapes popular among 17th-century Flemish and Dutch painters.

The meticulous execution, the handling of successive planes—from the scorched earth of the foreground to the hazy distance—as well as the treatment of the figures, all testify to a direct or indirect knowledge of Italy, in the tradition of masters such as Jan Both, Jan Asselijn, or Herman van Swanevelt.

Support: The work is executed on an oak panel, a noble and traditional support for Flemish and Dutch painting. The reverse of the panel, particularly eloquent, reveals tool marks visible to the naked eye, attesting to the artisanal handling of the wood according to 17th-century practices and constituting a valuable clue to its age. A wax seal, affixed to the upper left of the back, attests to its provenance or its passage through an old collection.

Frame: A beautiful gilt frame from the Napoleon III period, decorated with foliage in relief on a striated background, displaying a lovely antique patina.

The artwork can be viewed and collected from the gallery (07240).
