A pine tree leaning over a small cove, the water turquoise, and, on the beach, two fishermen pulling their boat ashore. We are on the Var coast, somewhere near Saint-Raphaël, on a clear, calm morning.
Hubert-Robert builds the entire composition around this large pine tree. The trunk rises from the lower left, curves, and the branches extend toward the right edge of the canvas, like a green canopy over the scene. The foliage is painted with thick, swift brushstrokes in yellowish greens, bluish greens, and a few splashes of ochre. You can almost feel the light filtering through the branches.
Below, the light-sand beach slopes down toward the sea. A second boat, its red sail folded, waits a little further away. In the background, warm-toned rocks jut out into the water, and the horizon fades into a pale sky. The water shifts from a transparent green near the shore to a deep blue offshore: this is the Mediterranean as we know it.
A beautiful, luminous, fresh, and well-composed painting by an artist who knew this coastline intimately.
On the back, the artist has inscribed the title and his name. There is also an exhibition label from the Maison des Artistes in Burie (Charente-Maritime). It lists the painter, his membership in the Salon des Artistes Français, the subject, and the dimensions.
Condition
Very good overall condition. The paint layer is fresh, with no visible losses. The frame shows some wear on the gilding, which is normal for its age.
The Artist
Marius Hubert-Robert was born in Paris in 1885. During World War I, he served as an army painter with the 10th Army and donated two of his war-themed works to the Musée du Luxembourg.
An avid traveler, he enjoyed the support of the Astor family, which enabled him to travel the world: North Africa, the Near East, Indochina, Greece, Spain, as well as North America (where his work was widely exhibited) and South America. He brought back vividly colored oil paintings and watercolors from these trips. The Galerie Charpentier held several exhibitions of his work in the 1920s and 1930s, and he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon d’Hiver, and the Salon des Indépendants. He was also a highly sought-after illustrator and created the watercolors for numerous travel books.
The Mediterranean remained his favorite subject. He settled in the South of France, where he died in 1966, in Nice.
