How many centuries does it take for an oak tree to reach this size?

Eugen Bracht sets up his easel at the foot of two immense trees. On the left, a massive, almost black trunk from which twisted branches extend in all directions. On the right, a second oak leans sharply and cuts diagonally across the canvas, from bottom to top. Its base, where the bark flakes off in light-colored shards, is painted with astonishing energy.

The foliage is the true subject of the painting. Olive green, yellow, gold: autumn is beginning. Bracht applies the color in small, thick, clearly visible strokes that catch the light like real leaves. Up close, it’s a mosaic of texture. From a slight distance, the entire dome begins to shimmer.

Beneath this canopy, life continues at its own pace. A herd of cows grazes in the meadow on the left. Another animal has slipped behind the large tree trunk. And further away, on the right, a small, dark figure leaning on her staff: the herder. She provides a sense of scale to the scene. In front of her, the trees seem even taller.

In the foreground, the ground is rendered with broad brushstrokes in shades of ochre and burnt earth, crisscrossed by long shadows. In the background, a green hill and a pale sky open up the space and allow the composition to breathe.

The oak holds a special place in German painting: a tree symbolizing strength and endurance, it has been cherished by landscape painters since the Romantic era. Bracht depicts it here without exaggeration, with a direct gaze and a very free touch. We recognize the style of his later years, which had become more Impressionist and more colorful. The signature in capital letters, typical of this period, and the old inscription on the back, which bears the title and the word “Dresden,” point in the same direction: the painting was most likely created during his years as a professor in Dresden.

A large-scale, generous, and luminous work by a master of German landscape painting whose works are featured in the world’s greatest museums.

Condition
Very good condition. The canvas is clean, the colors are fresh, and the paint is well-preserved. Presented in a modern stuccoed wooden frame with a bronze patina, in very good condition.

The Artist
Eugen Bracht was born in 1842 in Morges, on the shores of Lake Geneva, to German parents. He grew up in Darmstadt and trained in landscape painting, notably in Düsseldorf under the Norwegian artist Hans Gude. Plagued by doubts about his calling, he temporarily abandoned painting for a career in business, before returning to it with renewed vigor.

His travels to the Near East brought him recognition: his Oriental motifs earned him his first public successes, followed by a brilliant career marked by official commissions and honors. In 1882, he became a professor of landscape painting at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. He also painted Baltic cliffs, moors, mountains, and even the Hoesch steelworks, demonstrating his boundless curiosity.

From 1901 to 1919, he taught landscape painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. This was the period of his full artistic maturity: starting from an academic style, he became one of the leading figures of German naturalism and impressionism. He later retired to Darmstadt, where he died in 1921.

His works are held at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the National Gallery in Budapest, and the museum in Buenos Aires, among others.
