Eugene Demester - Fishing Boats In A Breton Port At Dusk - Oil On Canvas - Signed
Artist: Demester Eugène (19147 – 1984, France)
EUGÈNE DEMESTER (Paris, 1914 - 1984)
Fishing boats in a Breton harbor, sunset effect
Oil on canvas
Signed lower left
35 × 28 cm (frame: 49 × 41 cm)
Very good condition
In late-day light, the sun dilutes into a pearly halo in the center of the composition, iridescing the calm waters of the harbor. Boats with ochre and sienna sails stand out against the light, their slender masts tracing a network of vertical lines that give rhythm to the space. In the background, the quay and its lively silhouettes fade into the luminous haze. The vivid, charged brushstrokes, the shifting reflections on the water and the range of colors - from bluish gray to warm russet - testify to a solid, controlled impressionism, characteristic of the artist's seascapes.
The stuccoed wood frame with rinceaux decoration, painted beige-gray, is period and in good condition.
The artist
Eugène Demester was born in Paris in 1914 into an artistic milieu: his father, Charles Demester, was himself a painter. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he won several awards, including the Prix Rosset at the Salon d'Hiver. His work is divided between river landscapes, market scenes and, above all, seascapes and port scenes, for which he shows a marked predilection for Brittany - its ports, changing skies and fishing boats. He died in 1984.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
