Henri Roche - Farmyard In The Ardèche - Oil On Canvas - Circa 1940

Artist: Roche Henri (1900 – 1969, France)
Henri Roche, Farmyard in the Ardèche, Oil on canvas, Signed lower right, 92 x 73 cm. This oil on canvas depicts a lively farmyard in the Ardèche region, framed by an imposing semicircular arch built of basalt and granite stones, typical of the rural architecture of the Vivarais. Through this monumental arch, the eye is drawn to a long building with exposed stone walls, topped with a roof of pinkish terracotta tiles, bathed in southern light.

The scene of daily life is captured with naturalness: several figures—children, women, a man sitting on a wheelbarrow in the foreground—are busy in the courtyard strewn with materials, while a few chickens peck freely. The composition, created by the framing of the arch, gives the impression of a window onto the rural world.

The palette blends grays, ochres, and warm beiges, enhanced by the clear blue of a sunny sky. The broad, confident brushstrokes testify to Roche's academic mastery, honed in Paris. Note: the canvas shows slight sagging and some minor craquelure in a narrow area of the sky. A small repair is visible on the back. The signature H. Roche is visible in the lower right corner.
The original frame shows some signs of age (oxidation).

The artist
Born in Lamastre, Ardèche, Henri Roche had a difficult childhood: orphaned at the age of 14, he grew up without his parents in this village in the Vivarais region. After completing his military service, he moved to Paris where he stayed for seven years, assiduously attending various painting academies and rigorously perfecting his art.

His talent was recognized by his peers: admitted to the Société des Artistes Français and a prize-winner at the École des Beaux-Arts, he returned to Lamastre in 1935. There, he led the life of a painter deeply attached to his region, exploring the surrounding paths with his easel and brushes. A specialist in landscapes and portraits of elderly people, he also painted a few still lifes. He exhibited his canvases in Valence, Annonay, and Lyon, attracting collectors even to his hometown.

A singular and recognizable figure—a tall man dressed in velvet, wearing a newsboy cap—he left a lasting mark on local memory. He died in 1969, and a street in Lamastre is named after him.
