Artist: Berthier Ernest (1873 – 1967, France)
Ernest Berthier (1873 - 1967, France)
La place du Châtelet, Paris
Watercolor
Signed lower left
36.2 x 26.5 cm on view - 49 × 39 cm framed
Very good condition
Shown in dark green marie-louise and silver molded frame.
A watercolorist born in Ardèche, active in Lyon and Paris, Ernest Berthier was particularly attached to street scenes in the rain, which he made one of his favorite subjects.
This view of the Place du Châtelet is a typical example: strollers with parasols unfurled enliven the foreground, their silhouettes reflected on the wet cobblestones. In the background, the Palm Fountain occupies the axis of the composition, while the Saint-Jacques Tower looms in the misty atmosphere on the left. The golden and ochre foliage sets the scene in autumn.
The palette, dominated by blue-greys, muted greens and touches of gold, aptly captures the diffused light of a rainy day in Paris. The brushstroke is free and confident, the treatment of reflections on the ground particularly masterful.
The work is signed lower right, titled on the back of the sheet. It is in a very good state of preservation.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
