Late 18th-century French School – Elegant Woman With A Large Bonnet And Green Shawl – Oil On Canvas
Elegant Woman with a Large Bonnet and a Green Shawl
French School, late 18th – very early 19th century (circa 1795–1805)
Oil on canvas
55 × 46 cm (72 × 63 cm with frame)
Unsigned
Beautiful gilded and carved wooden frame, decorated with acanthus leaves and a pearl frieze, likely original
All the charm of late 18th-century portraiture is captured in this painting: a mature woman looks straight at us, against a deep brown background that brings out the brilliance of her costume. The painter made no attempt to flatter, and that is precisely what makes this face so vivid—a frank gaze, a delicate complexion, an immediate presence that transcends the two centuries separating us from the subject.
The costume is a true tour de force and precisely dates the work: a large pleated lace bonnet framing the face, crowned with a superb green and lilac ribbon bow; a white muslin fichu crossed over the chest; a loose-fitting green shawl belted with a blue and yellow stripe and tied with a pink ribbon. This ensemble—tall headdress, crossed shawl, and colored shawl—dates the painting to around 1795–1805, at the heart of the Consular period.
The execution captivates with its confidence and sensitivity in rendering textures: the airy transparency of the lace, the softness of the fabrics, the velvety quality of the complexion. Although the artist remains anonymous, the quality of the work places it well above the standard of contemporary production, and one can discern a hand trained in the tradition of the great French portrait school of 1800.
Condition: very good overall condition, particularly impressive for a work of this age. The canvas exhibits a uniform network of craquelure, which is normal and expected for this period, as well as some minor wear visible in the detailed photographs. The frame, which may be original, retains its beautiful antique gilding with patina and minor signs of wear—a rare asset, as the portrait and frame appear to have weathered the years together.
